An unexpected shadow of scandal has fallen over the Swedish royal family, as Princess Sofia's name has been mentioned in the infamous Jeffrey Epstein files, according to documents and emails recently published by the media in Sweden.
According to the prestigious newspaper Dagens Nyheter, the emails suggest that Princess Sofia, now 41, was invited to Epstein's private island, Little Saint James, and that she met with the American financier several times around 2005.
At the time, Sofia was not yet a member of the royal family. She was a former model and reality TV contestant trying to build a career in the art world. The documents show that she met Epstein through Swedish entrepreneur Barbro Ehnbom, who in an email introduced Sofia as an “aspiring actress” who had just arrived in New York.
Another email, which has raised questions, shows that Epstein offered Sofia a ticket to visit him in the Caribbean while he was there. The Swedish Royal Family has responded, stating that the Princess declined the invitation to the private island and that she has never traveled there.
However, the Royal Palace has confirmed the meetings between Sofia and Epstein, stressing that they only took place around 2005 and that the princess has had no contact with him in the last 20 years.
Another sensitive element in the documents is the claim that Epstein offered to help Sofia build an acting career. This too, royal authorities have categorically denied, calling the information untrue.
The palace has not provided details about the location, circumstances or reasons for the meetings with the American financier, who was later convicted of sexual crimes against minors - a silence that has further fueled speculation in Swedish public opinion.
As the Epstein files continue to bring to light well-known names from politics, business and the world aristocracy, the inclusion of Princess Sofia's name has caused shock and strong debate in Sweden, bringing attention back to the dark past of one of the biggest global scandals of recent decades.
