She was born in China, to a family of engineers, and as a teenager was a very talented volleyball player and graduated from high school to become a nurse. However, she decided to continue her education in America, where she successfully studied at the University of California and Yale. As a student, she lived in the house of Jake and Joyce Cherry, and soon Jake left his wife and married Wendy in 1990.
After a failed marriage and the completion of her studies, Deng returned to China, where she took a job in Hong Kong at a television company owned by Rupert Murdoch. In just one year, she managed to rise from the position of junior manager to the position of vice president, which was a remarkable achievement.
In 1997, on Murdoch's first visit to the Chinese branch of his business empire, Wendy met the former tycoon and caught his eye. She immediately became his personal translator and they soon began a romance. Murdoch eventually ended his 30-year marriage to his second wife, Anna Torv, over the woman.
“I started a dangerous game. I had a great career. If we hadn’t succeeded, I would have lost everything. I would have had to say, ‘I’m sorry and goodbye.’ But Rupert said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll marry you,’” Wendy said at the time. However, Wendy did not aim to become the classic billionaire’s wife; she skillfully ran various businesses, using his money, name and position and expanding her contacts.
Although she promised Rupert that she did not want to have children because he himself did not plan to become a father, she convinced him to freeze his sperm. Then, secretly, she underwent artificial insemination treatment herself, confronting him with the completed act. The couple had two daughters: Grace and Chloe. Deng brought her large family from China to live with them in America, and Rupert soon found himself in a family where everyone, including his daughters, spoke Chinese and he did not understand a word.
