Renowned actor John Malkovich has publicly admitted, after nearly four decades, that he still regrets his brief romance with actress Michelle Pfeiffer during the filming of the film "Dangerous Liaisons" in 1988. At the time, both were married, Malkovich to actress Glenne Headly and Pfeiffer to actor Peter Horton, and their brief behind-the-scenes relationship directly affected their family relationships, although the romance did not last.
In an interview for the podcast "Fashion Neurosis," the 71-year-old said that this period was one of the experiences that has followed him throughout his life. He admitted that by entering into an intimate relationship with Pfeiffer, he had "sabotaged" his professional relationship with her, although he highly valued her as a colleague for her honesty, humor and talent.
Malkovich emphasized that over the years he has come to understand something fundamental: a great colleague is much rarer and more precious than a temporary relationship. He cited as an example his long relationship with actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite, with whom he collaborated for more than 30 years. According to him, the fact that they have always maintained professional boundaries has allowed them to still remain close friends and collaborators.
The story of Malkovich and Pfeiffer serves as a reminder that solid professional relationships and respect on stage can be more important and lasting than fleeting romances.
