If you've bought a smartphone recently, you've probably noticed that a plastic SIM card is no longer required to use the mobile network. Instead, users simply activate their device using a QR code. The technology behind this is called eSIM, and it's already being used as a successor to the classic SIM card.
Whereas in the past, users simply swapped out their SIM cards when switching carriers, eSIM requires a different approach. Users download a digital profile, typically by scanning a QR code. Activation takes just a few minutes.
What exactly is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a small chip that manufacturers permanently embed in a smartphone. The letter "e" comes from the word embedded, which means "integrated." Unlike a plastic SIM card, this chip cannot be physically removed or replaced. All important data, such as the phone number and contract information, is stored digitally on that chip, writes Fenix magazine.
