Hugh Edwards, the former British BBC news presenter, once a respected figure known to every Briton, appeared in a London court today and pleaded guilty to all three counts of child pornography, a year after the discovery of the scandal that led to his departure from the British public broadcaster.
Edwards, 62, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth. When questioned, he pleaded guilty to all three charges. Prosecutor Ian Hope said the 41 images and videos of the children were sent to Edwards by an adult man on the WhatsApp app between December 2020 and August 2021.
He added that seven of the 41 images were of a very serious nature and two of the seven were pornographic videos of a seven- to nine-year-old child. Edwards was one of the BBC's highest-paid news presenters (around €500,000 for 2022-23) and one of Britain's most popular.
For more than 20 years he anchored the evening news at 9 p.m. It was he who announced the death of Queen Elizabeth to the nation in 2022, while also covering some of the most important events of recent years, such as the election, royal weddings and the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.
Edwards was suspended in July last year after he was accused of paying a teenager to provide him with nude photos.
