With a fortune estimated at $125 billion and his enormous influence on the global technology scene through Microsoft, Bill Gates is one of the most emblematic figures in the business world.
However, he himself has admitted that his path could have taken a different direction if he had not managed to overcome a personal weakness: procrastination.
Born in 1955 in Seattle, Gates showed little interest in computers. During his years at Harvard, which he interrupted to found Microsoft with childhood friend Paul Allen in 1975, he gained a reputation as a “last-minute student.” As he himself confessed in a 2005 interview, he liked to give the impression that he did not read or attend lectures, while in reality he only prepared for exams at the last moment.
Although this behavior caused laughter among his friends, the reality of the business world was quite different. Gates understood that in business, delays and waiting until the last minute do not lead to success. It took him several years to "overcome" this habit and, as he admitted, he tried to adopt the methodical and organized style of his more orderly colleagues.
Today, having retired from active leadership of Microsoft, Gates devotes most of his time and wealth to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which funds projects in health, vaccines, education and environmental protection. In parallel, he invests in green energy technologies, innovations to combat climate change and solutions for sustainable agriculture.
Although he has made great progress, he does not hide that procrastination continues to be a challenge: "I continue to work on it, but it is not a good habit," he stated.
