
A serious incident has shaken amateur football in Ecuador, where a referee was shot dead while officiating a match. Authorities have launched an investigation, while the circumstances point to a planned attack.
According to preliminary data, the victim has been identified as Javier Ortega, 48, an experienced referee in amateur football. The incident occurred in Pasahe, in the province of El Oro, during a match that was taking place in the presence of several spectators.
Witnesses at the scene reported that several armed men entered the field and surrounded the referee, firing at him. Ortega immediately fell to the ground.
After the shooting, panic gripped the field and the stands. Players and spectators quickly fled, while the suspected perpetrators fled before the police arrived.
An ambulance arrived at the scene, but doctors were unable to save the 48-year-old's life, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have launched investigations to fully uncover the incident. According to authorities, the case is not considered a random incident, but a genuine assassination attempt with a clear target: the victim.
The identity of the perpetrators and the motives for the attack still remain unclear.
