48 national teams and millions of hearts, the 2026 World Cup opens tomorrow; here are the schedules and the full match calendar

The wait is over. Tomorrow the 23rd edition of the World Cup starts. This edition marks a historic moment for the competition, as for the first time the number of participating teams has expanded significantly, increasing competition and global interest.

The wait is over. Tomorrow the 23rd edition of the World Cup starts. The tournament will be held for the first time in three countries: Canada, Mexico and the USA, from June 11 to July 19, 2026, where the grand final will also be played.

The 2026 World Cup draw has determined the composition of the 12 groups, thus formalizing the journey of 48 representatives towards the most important trophy in world football. This edition marks a historic moment for the competition, as for the first time the number of participating teams has significantly expanded, increasing competition and global interest.

The top two teams in each group will automatically qualify for the next round, while the third-place finishers will also have a chance. The eight best teams among the 12 third-place finishers will complete the 32 teams that advance to the knockout stage.

Due to the expansion of the tournament, a new round has been added, the round of 16. After that, the competition continues according to the traditional scheme with the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final. As a result, the teams that reach the end of the competition will play eight matches, one more than in the previous format.

The total number of matches will increase significantly. From the 64 matches that took place in previous World Cups, a full 104 matches will be played in 2026. This has meant that the tournament will last 40 days, from June 11 to July 19.

The group stage will start on June 11 and end on June 28, lasting 18 days. Immediately after that, the knockout stage will begin, without any rest days. The round of 16 and round of 16 matches will take place from June 28 to July 7. The only rest day in this period will be July 8.

Then, the quarterfinals will be played from July 9 to 12, with a day off on July 13. The semifinals are scheduled for July 14 and 15. The third-place match will take place on July 17, while the grand final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
