Chapecoense has secured promotion to the elite of Brazilian football, successfully concluding a dramatic and highly emotional season.
Fans took over the pitch after a narrow 1-0 home win over Atletico Goianiense, a result that gave the team third place in Serie B and a ticket to Serie A.
The scenes of joy took place just four days before the ninth anniversary of the tragedy that shocked the football world, when the plane carrying the team to the first final of the South American Cup against Atletico Nacional crashed near Medellin in 2016. The accident killed 71 people, including 19 players, 14 members of the technical staff and 9 club directors, while only six people survived.
After that tragedy, their opponents in that final gave up and demanded that the title be awarded to Chapecoense, a gesture that became a symbol of solidarity around the world. However, the huge blow also had consequences on the field, with inconsistent results and relegation from Serie A in 2019, only to immediately return as Serie B champions, before falling again and struggling to survive in the following seasons.
This year, under the guidance of coach Gilmar Dal Poco, Chapecoense managed to rebuild and keep the dream alive until the final day. Losses to rivals Goias and Criciuma paved the way, while the winning goal came from the penalty spot thanks to defender Walter Klar.
At the final whistle, the fans "poured" onto the pitch, hugging the players, dancing and celebrating in midfield, a comeback that symbolizes the strength, resilience and spirit of a club that has never given up. Chapecoense is back where it belongs.
Today it's been 9 years since the defense of goalkeeper Danilo who classified Chapecoense in the final of the Copa Sul-Americana 2016.
