Barcelona is in a clear crisis this season. The "magic" of the last edition in the championship is not being repeated and Chavi's team sees itself far from the leaders of Girona and the historical rivals of Real Madrid. But beyond the sports crisis, there is also an economic one.
The club remains deeply in debt and the prospect of expulsion from Europe over the referees' pay issue has prompted Laporta to think of ways to save as much as possible for the difficult days ahead. And one of these ideas is to freeze Robert Lewandowski's salary.
The Pole joined the club in 2022, signing a three-year contract with an option for another year. As the Catalans had liquidity problems, he agreed that his salary would increase year after year.
Thus, he earned around 17.3 million pounds in his first year at the Catalans, while in this current one, his salary is 22.5 million pounds. In the third year, that of the 2024-2025 edition, Lewandowski's salary would increase to 27.7 million pounds, according to the signed agreement. The club has already started contacts with his manager, Pini Zahavi, to convince him to change the terms of the agreement, in order to block this increase in the player's salary and he will be paid again like this year. A small but significant saving for the club, which by blocking Lewandowski's salary, seeks to set an example and do the same with several other players.
