The team led by Vincent Wagner sealed promotion with a convincing 3-0 home win over Preussen Münster, a team that had already been relegated.
With 62 points, Elversberg finished the season in second place. The team overtook SC Paderborn 07 thanks to the better goal difference, as both teams finished the championship with equal points.
Together with league champions FC Schalke 04, Elversberg secured direct promotion. For the club, which a few years ago was still playing in the Regionalliga, this is the first promotion to the Bundesliga in its history.
