George Russell was the winner in the sprint race of the Chinese Grand Prix, confirming Mercedes' dynamic start to this year's Formula 1.

George Russell maintained Mercedes' excellent start to the 2026 season, triumphing in the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint, after a race of tight duels, strategic decisions and the decisive appearance of the safety car.

The start was not ideal for the British driver, as Lewis Hamilton used fourth place on the lap to move ahead at the first corner. Charles Leclerc remained close to the two leaders, with the top positions changing hands in the opening laps.

Russell regained the lead on lap six, building a gap of over a second and denying Hamilton the opportunity to use the overtaking system. The seven-time world champion's aggressiveness affected his tyres, which Leclerc used to pass on lap eight.

The race changed when Nico Hulkenberg's Audi stopped on the track, bringing out the safety car.

At the restart, Leclerc spun, giving Russell the space to control the pace. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri also moved quickly, while Kimi Antonelli, despite a 10-second penalty for contact with Izaak Hajjar, managed to limit the losses.

In the final laps, Russell effectively managed his lead. Leclerc came very close but never found a chance to overtake, with Hamilton completing the podium trio, ahead of Norris, Antonelli and Piastri.
