Manchester City appear to be preparing for the end of one of the most successful periods in the club's history. According to BBC Sport, there is a belief within the Cityzens' camp that Pep Guardiola could be dismissed from the team's bench after the final Premier League match of the season against Aston Villa.
Although Manchester City officially continues to insist that the Spanish coach has a contract valid for another year, signals within the club speak of the start of preparations for a new era at the "Etihad Stadium".
Sources close to the club indicate that City's leaders have begun to think about the transition after Guardiola, while some of the players are believed to expect the 55-year-old coach to leave at the end of this season.
In parallel, the club is also discussing how it will honor the coach who is widely considered the greatest in Manchester City's history.
Guardiola took charge of the team in 2016 and has since transformed the club into a European football superpower. In 10 years at City, he has won a whopping 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, three FA Cups and five EFL Cups.
In fact, his adventure could end with another championship title, as Manchester City continues the race for the Premier League trophy until the final week.
Meanwhile, the name that is being most heavily mentioned to succeed Guardiola is that of Enzo Maresca, his former assistant at Manchester City and former Chelsea manager. The Italian is seen as the ideal profile to continue the philosophy built by Guardiola at the club.
For months, speculation about the future of the Spanish coach has been ongoing, however, Guardiola himself has denied leaving in his public statements.
"I'm here, I have a contract," he recently told BBC Sport, shortly before the FA Cup final.
However, despite official statements, the atmosphere at Manchester City seems to be heading towards the closure of a historical cycle that forever changed the identity and dimension of the English club.
