Football restores tensions between Ankara and Berlin, German police stop Turkish

Berlin police have stopped Turkish fans who marched today ahead of the Euro 2024 quarter-final between the Netherlands and Turkey. Turkish fans have been banned after waving the far-right symbol - the same gesture that led to the suspension of the Turkish player.

The salute with the "Grey Wolves" symbol - the three fingers together with the raised index finger and little finger form a wolf's head - is associated with the Turkish ultra-nationalist movement which the German government considers racist and anti-Semitic.

"During the march, the Turkish fans greeted with the symbol of the "Grey Wolves". Therefore, the police stopped the march and called on the fans not to make such symbols. "Political messages have no place in fan marches," said the Berlin police.

In the context of the diplomatic clashes between Berlin and Ankara over the symbol of the "Grey Wolves", the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will attend tonight's match between the Netherlands and Turkey at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
