Almost eighteen years after the World Cup final, Marco Materazzi recounted to the Times the famous episode of the verbal clash with Zidane that ended with the headbutt and the sending off of the Frenchman.
" It doesn't match what my career has been. That episode should never have happened. In the tension of that final in Berlin, between fights and insults, Zidane offered me his shirt and I said no, that I preferred his sister. Then he turned around and reacted as everyone imagines. I never saw Zinedin again ," he said.
In the interview, Materazzi confessed that he misses the dressing room, which, according to him, gave him the feeling of a big family.
" To share the field again with people like Julio Cesar, Maicon, Zanetti, Lucio, Sneijder, Cambiasso, Figo or Diego Milito is a mixture of happiness and nostalgia. What I miss the most is the dressing room. This feeling of having a family, with people you live with every day and with whom you share everything ," he said.
Materazzi emphasized his appreciation of Mourinho, who he called the best he had in his entire career.
" The best coach I've had. I was used to being important, being a captain, but with Mourinho I started to lose importance. But he was honest with me from the first moment ," he concluded.
