The case of the tragic accident that took the lives of Portuguese footballer Diogo Zhota and his brother, Andre Silva, has been closed criminally by Spanish authorities. According to the decision of the judicial authorities, no criminal liability has been established in connection with the incident.
The court of the province of Zamora, in northwestern Spain, has announced that the accident that occurred on July 3, 2025 on the A-52 highway, near the Cernadilla area, was caused by a vehicle tire explosion.
According to official data, the luxury Lamborghini driven by Zhota veered off the road during an overtaking maneuver. The car then crashed into the median strip and burst into flames.
After a thorough analysis of the evidence and the expertise of road accident specialists, the High Court of Justice of Castilla y León decided not to initiate criminal prosecution.
The investigation into the case was closed in November, without identifying elements of criminal negligence or liability of any third party.
However, authorities emphasize that the lack of criminal liability does not preclude the possibility of pursuing civil remedies. Victims' families can seek compensation through civil lawsuits, if they see fit.
The two brothers were travelling to Santander, from where they planned to take a ferry to the UK. Diogo Zhota was expected to return to Liverpool for pre-season.
According to reports, the footballer had chosen to travel by car following medical advice to avoid flying, due to a recent lung operation.
The tragic event came just 11 days after Zhota married his partner, Rute Cardoso, in Porto. The funeral ceremony for the two brothers took place in Gondomar, attended by family, friends and the entire Liverpool squad.
