Xabi Alonso has left Real Madrid after just over seven months as coach. The former midfielder left the club "by mutual agreement" following their defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday and with his team four points behind the Catalan club at the top of La Liga.
Alonso officially took charge on June 1 after a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he won the domestic double in the 2023-24 season and guided the team to the Europa League final. After overseeing Madrid's run to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup, he made an impressive start, winning 13 of his next 14 matches, barring a heavy derby defeat to Atlético Madrid.
A defeat to Liverpool on November 4 sparked a run of two wins in eight games and although Alonso bounced back by winning five games in a row, the improvement has not been enough to convince the hierarchy that he should continue.
"Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his term as coach of the first team. Xabi Alonso will always have the love and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always embodied the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home. Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and all his coaching staff for their work and dedication during this time and wishes them all the best in this new chapter of their lives ," Real Madrid said in a statement.
