English football and Tottenham Hotspur are in mourning after the passing of club legend Martin Chivers at the age of 80.
The former striker was one of the greatest players in Spurs history and is ranked third in the club's all-time top scorers list. During his career with the Lilywhites, Chivers played 367 official matches, scoring 174 goals, an impressive record that placed him among the icons of English football.
Born in Southampton, Chivers also represented the England national team, for which he recorded 24 appearances and scored 13 goals.
Tottenham were the first to react officially, leading the tributes to their former star. The club's statement read: "It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our legendary former striker, Martin Chivers. Our deepest condolences go out to Martin's family, friends and former teammates at this extremely sad time. Our players will wear black armbands for tonight's game against Bournemouth. Rest in peace, Martin. One of the greatest of all time."
Former Spurs player Steve Archibald also paid tribute. The 69-year-old Scot wrote on social media: "I saw the great Martin Chivers before I turned professional. He was a joy to watch, like a Rolls-Royce, so smooth on the move, brilliant in the air and a great finisher. But above all, he was a truly good man."
Martin Chivers will forever remain an iconic figure in Tottenham's history and an unforgettable name in English football.
