Thomas Müller has recorded his first success with his new team.
The 2014 World Champion and his Vancouver Whitecaps team triumphed in the Canadian Championship final, defeating Vancouver FC 4-2 (3-1) in a derby. Müller played a crucial role in his historic 35th title.
The 36-year-old provided the assist for the first goal. Müller crossed from the right and teammate Ali Ahmed brilliantly headed the ball into the net to make it 1-0 in the fifth minute.
Just five minutes later, the Bayern icon scored himself. Müller took charge and scored a penalty with an unstoppable shot into the right corner.
The Canadian Premier League team, who are in the underdog position, managed to recover the score 2-1 in the 35th minute of the first leg against Vancouver City, but a few seconds later, Ahmed doubled the lead to 3-1.
This was a foregone conclusion, as Müller's Whitecaps had the final completely under control, 74 percent possession and 20 shots on goal against 4, leaving no doubt that the favorites would win.
Thomas Müller made German football history. With the 35th title of his career, he surpassed Real Madrid legend and fellow World Cup winner Toni Kroos, who has an equally incredible 34 titles in his career.
As usual, Müller downplayed his personal achievement in advance, portraying himself as a team player.
"I'm not focused on making history. I'm focused on having that feeling of victory, that feeling that we're strong and we're developing as a team and we're having fun playing football together," said the 36-year-old.
