The Iranian Football Federation has launched an effort to open talks with FIFA with the aim of moving its national team's matches at the 2026 World Cup from the United States to Mexico. According to the official calendar, these matches are scheduled to take place on American territory.
This request comes in the context of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns about the security of the Iranian team. However, FIFA has rejected this possibility, leaving the existing planning in place.
Iran's position was made public by the Iranian embassy in Mexico, which confirmed the existence of these diplomatic efforts. According to the Iranian Football Federation, a key factor in this initiative was the statement of US President Donald Trump regarding the team's safety.
" After US President Donald Trump clearly stated that he cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, it is natural that we will not go to America ," said federation president Mehdi Taj.
On the other hand, FIFA has reacted with an official statement, considering the matter closed. The organization emphasizes that it is in constant contact with all participating federations, including Iran, about organizing the 2026 World Cup.
" FIFA expects all participating teams to play matches according to the calendar published on December 6, 2025 ," the statement said.
