David Hancko has experienced one of the most dramatic episodes of this year's transfer window, a journey from a closed deal, to public scorn, to a golden opportunity at one of Europe's biggest clubs.
The Slovakian defender had reached a full agreement with Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, with Feyenoord accepting a record €40 million bid, making it the biggest sale in the Dutch club's history. Hancko even travelled to Austria to join Al Nassr's training camp and be introduced alongside star player Cristiano Ronaldo.

But the scenario took a strange and embarrassing turn: Hancko was not allowed to train and was isolated in a secluded hotel, without access to the team or the technical staff. After several days of waiting, the Saudi club informed him that they would not finalize the transfer and that the defender was no longer wanted.
“Shameful and unprecedented,” Feyenoord spokesman Raymond Salomon called the behavior. “He had a full agreement with the club, and they called him to camp only to slam the door in his face. That doesn’t happen in professional football.”
The situation was even more difficult for the player, after he had vacated his apartment in Rotterdam and said goodbye to his teammates, convinced that the new adventure had begun.
When everything seemed to be falling apart, the news that changed his career came: Atlético Madrid entered the race strongly and reached an agreement with Feyenoord for the transfer of the 26-year-old defender.
Now all that is awaited is the passing of the medical examinations and the signing of the contract that will officially make him part of the Spanish giant. For Hancko, from a humiliating episode in Saudi Arabia, the new adventure in La Liga could turn into the biggest and most glorious challenge of his career.
