Dramatic moments on Tuesday evening in the English Championship match between West Bromwich and Middlesbrough, after one of the referees of the challenge felt unwell. The fourth umpire took his place and the panel of judges was completed with a member of the public, who also happened to be a judge.
Assistant referee Rob Smith was taken to hospital after being stretchered off the pitch. The doctors present immediately rushed to the referee, who fainted on the sideline, while the fans waited in fear in the stands.
The match resumed around eight minutes later with Jacob Miles, who was the fourth official, ready to take over the role of winger. But one element was missing: the fourth referee. Would there be a referee in the stands? To everyone's surprise, a fan, Eddie Smart, appeared, acting as the fourth referee. The Daily Mirror adds that Smart, who was actually the referee, happened to be a fan at the match.
