
As 2025 draws to a close, fans are already looking ahead to 2026, which will see a host of exciting sporting events. From the Milan-Cortina Winter Games, the World Cup, to the Grand Slams and the Formula 1 World Championship, the calendar for the next 12 months will be packed with events that will undoubtedly entertain and excite us.
The Winter Olympic Games in Milan Cortina will attract a lot of attention. Even in Albania, there will be great interest in the most important winter sports event, as eyes will be on Lara Colturi, the 19-year-old who has chosen to compete for the red and black flag in Alpine skiing. The Winter Olympic Games will start on February 6 with the opening ceremony in San Siro. In total, 16 sports disciplines will be competed in 18 facilities located on an area of over 22 thousand km2 and 3,000 athletes from 90 different countries around the world will be involved. The closing ceremony will be on February 22 at the Verona Arena and a few weeks later the Winter Paralympic Games will be held.
But the event that will have the eyes of billions of inhabitants on planet Earth will undoubtedly be the World Cup, an event that continues to be dreamed of by the Albanian National Team and Kosovo, who will play the playoff matches in March. The USA, Canada and Mexico will host the most extraordinary football event from June 11 to July 19, in an edition where for the first time 48 teams will participate to play 104 matches. Next year's World Cup will open with the challenge between Mexico and South Africa at the mythical Azteca Stadium. After the group stage, the knockout phase will begin on June 28, while the grand final will be played at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19, while the match for third place will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Another event scheduled for 2026 is the next edition of the Mediterranean Games to be held in Taranto on August 21-September 3. 4,500 athletes from 26 countries will participate in this competition, competing in 30 sports disciplines. As every year, tennis has its important place in the sports calendar, with all attention being focused on the Alcaraz-Sinner duo, who have established their dominance as the two players who won the Grand Slam tournaments in 2025. The Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open are the tennis events that will undoubtedly have the most attention, with the eyes on the two world number one players as the rivalry between them continues.
The 2026 sports calendar cannot be considered complete without hand sports as this year the Women's Basketball World Cup as well as the European Volleyball Championships for boys and girls will take place. The Formula 1 World Cup will not be missing either, which will have radical changes in the regulations with Lando Norris as the pilot to beat, while MotoGP will also have its space with Marc Marquez as the reigning champion with the aim of triumphing again to bring the number of world titles in his career to 10. In other words, an extraordinary sports year awaits us with events to be enjoyed to the fullest by everyone.
