Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been formally charged by British police with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The incidents are alleged to have occurred between 2021 and 2022 and involve three different women.
According to authorities, two rape charges relate to one woman, three other charges relate to a second woman, while the sexual assault charge is attributed to a case involving a third woman.
The 32-year-old's contract with Arsenal ended on Monday, after a four-year stay at the club since his transfer from Atletico Madrid in October 2020 for a fee of £45.3 million.
He played 130 Premier League games for Arsenal, scoring nine goals. Last season, Partey scored four goals in 35 appearances in the English top flight, while in the Champions League he contributed to 12 matches, helping the London club reach the semi-finals, where they were eliminated by PSG.
The investigation into the matter began in February 2022, when police received the first report of rape. Officer Andi Furpi, who is leading the investigation, stated that the police's priority is to provide support to women who have come forward and reported the incident.
Thomas Partey is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5./ BBC
