Former Milan and Dutch national team legend Marco Van Basten has expressed concern about the crisis Italian football is going through, blaming foreign club owners for the decline in Serie A.
During an interview with journalist Carlo Pelegati, in promotion of the book "50 matches, endless emotions, Milan", Van Basten stated that Italian clubs have lost their historical identity.
According to him, returning Italian football to the hands of local owners would be an important step towards returning Serie A to the elite of European football.
" Currently there are many foreign club owners in Italy. They have no connection to the history of the clubs and are only interested in themselves. Italian football must be returned to the Italians so that it can return to the top of Europe ," declared Van Basten.
The former winner of the 1988 Ballon d'Or took Milan as an example, the club where he wrote the greatest story of his career.
" Milan is no longer what it used to be. I always follow it and I hope it comes back as soon as possible, because today Inter dominates Italian football and I don't like that at all ," he said.
Van Basten also commented on the current state of the Italian national team, highlighting the lack of stars that once characterized the "Azzurra".
" Italy has always had a great goalkeeper, a great defender, a great midfielder and a great striker. Today it is difficult to find these figures and that is strange. Italian football used to rule the world, and now it is no longer like that ," said the former Dutch striker.
Finally, he also talked about the World Cup, indicating that he will initially support the Netherlands, but if his team does not meet expectations, he will cheer for Brazil led by Carlo Ancelotti.
