The transfer of striker Neymar to PSG has gone down in history as the most expensive of all time, as the Parisians paid 222 million euros to get the footballer from Barcelona in 2017. But it is now suspected that to make this transfer possible, they received considerable help from the Ministry of Finance in France, which gave some fiscal relief to the club, making it possible to pay this stratospheric figure for the Brazilian.
The investigations started in September 2022, but it is reported that the investigators have already seized the complete documentation from the Ministry. Anti-corruption and financial fraud police forces have checked the offices of the ministry and the director general of the Department of Public Finance. The investigation began in 2022, after PSG's former director of public relations, Jean-Marsial Ribes, is accused of using his influence to break the law.
Currently, Hyge Renso, the former vice-president of the National Council of France, is under investigation and whether the latter tried to secure "tax benefits" from the government for PSG to facilitate the transfer of 222 million euros. According to AFP, it is suspected that Renso may have done so-called "influence trading" to make Neymar's move to France easier and to save the Parisian club several million euros.
