New fields, national stadium and youth programs are planned
FIFA and the Peace Board have formalized a cooperation agreement that aims to channel investment into conflict-affected areas, using football as a development tool. US President Donald Trump announced that as part of this initiative, FIFA will raise $75 million for projects in Gaza.
The Peace Board, created during the Trump presidency, held its first meeting focusing on the Gaza reconstruction fund. The plan is related to the recovery of the territory after the disarmament of Hamas. The disarmament of the militants, the withdrawal of Israeli troops, determining the value of the fund and the administration of humanitarian aid remain elements that are expected to affect the implementation of the project.
The agreement with FIFA includes the construction of 50 mini-fields near schools and residential areas, five full-size fields in different districts, a FIFA technology academy and a national stadium with a capacity of 20,000 seats.
"FIFA and the Peace Board have signed an important partnership agreement that will boost investment in football with the aim of supporting the recovery process in post-conflict areas," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement.
He added that "together with the support of the Peace Board, FIFA will foster this partnership, which is built to bring impact at every stage."
The program also envisages creating jobs, involving young people in sports activities, organizing leagues for boys and girls, as well as supporting community engagement and local commercial activities.
