Iran becomes the third non-host team to secure a ticket to the 2026 World Cup. The Asian representative has secured its place in next year's event after a 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan, the closest follower in the qualifying group in the Asian zone.
In fact, it was the hosts who were the most demanding, with Erkinov and Fajzullaev twice giving them the advantage, but Inter striker Mehdi Taremi gave Iran the equalizer with his two goals.
This draw mathematically secured one of the top two places in the group for Iran and made them the next team after the hosts USA, Canada, and Mexico, as well as Japan and New Zealand, to guarantee participation in the 2026 summer tournament.
Iran is going to the World Cup for the seventh time in history.
