Basel's Albanian midfielder, champion title winner, Taulant Xhaka has been sanctioned with a one-match suspension, a fine and community service for the benefit of football for his inappropriate behavior and comments during the celebrations at Barfüsserplatz.
Xhaka started a hate song, which included the words “Death and hate for FCZ”, during the title celebration with Basel fans, causing him to enter disciplinary proceedings. Today (Friday), the Swiss Football League announced that it has already made a decision, where Xhaka has been sentenced to suspension, fines and community service.
" On Monday, the Swiss Football League (SFL) opened disciplinary proceedings against Taulant Xhaka, after the FC Basel 1893 player made disparaging comments about other clubs over the microphone during spontaneous championship celebrations at Barfüsserplatz on Sunday evening ," the announcement initially said.
" In his decision, the President of the Disciplinary Committee, acting as sole judge, imposed a triple sanction on the Basel midfielder: a one-match suspension, which takes effect immediately if FC Basel formally waives its right to appeal, a fine of 7,500 francs and 18 hours of community service for the benefit of football. This must be done within six months in consultation with the SFL office ," the SFL statement concluded.
In addition to seeking the apologies presented, the single judge also took into account Taulant Xhaka's announced retirement in his decision. At the same time, however, the judge emphasized:
" The sentence should be combined with a higher fine and the obligation to carry out charity work for the benefit of football. This is to compensate for the negative impact that his behavior had on the public ," the judge said.
The one-match ban will rule Xhaka out of this weekend's away game against Young Boys, but not the final home game of the season against Luzern, where the Albanian midfielder will bid farewell to football. An appeal against the decision can be lodged with the Swiss Football League's Court of Appeal within five days.
