The Special Anti-Corruption Court has rejected the request of former Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu for an expert examination of the note "for Shkelzeni", a fax presented as evidence in the process for the Gërdec massacre by SPAK.
This fax was sent at the time by the former Minister of Justice, Aldo Bumçi, to the Ministry of Defense, for the opening of the weapons dismantling factory in Gërdec, a document which has the name of Shkëlzen Berisha 'For Shkëlzen', the son of the Prime Minister of the time, Sali Berisha. Mediu and Bumçi claim that the document is a fraud.
The former minister's lawyers also claimed a series of documents that were referred to them by prosecutors in court, but were not made available to them by the Court. To enable this, the hearing was postponed to February 10.
In the investigation file of the Gërdec massacre, Shkëlzen Berisha's name is also mentioned for phone calls with the owners of the weapons dismantling factory. The evidence presented by SPAK confirms Shkëlzen Berisha's involvement.
Mediu is accused of abuse of office, as, according to SPAK, the procedures for establishing the dismantling factory in Gërdec, near a residential area, as well as those for ammunition, were violated. Mediu himself has disputed the charges and the findings of the experts. Mediu's trial has been ongoing since April 2023.
The reopening of the case against Mediu was set in motion after 12 years at the initiative of the Durda family, one of the victims of the explosion on March 15, 2008, in the premises of the former "Tank Brigade", where 26 people lost their lives and hundreds of others were injured.
