Accused of killing and burning the police officer in '97 in the "Sixth

Two persons sentenced by a final decision by the Court of Serious Crimes have applied to the Court of Saranda for cancellation of the sentence.

Aleksandër Bala alias Aleko Bala, 54 years old, sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Court of Serious Crimes, has made a request to the Court of Saranda for "prescription of the criminal decision". The case is expected to be reviewed on Tuesday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. by Judge Mikel Hysometaj. Bala is apparently referring to the Albanian legislation that provides that "The sentencing decision is not executed when ten years have passed from the day it took final form for the decision containing a sentence of five to fifteen years of imprisonment". Bala carried out this request in 2022 as well, but apparently he did not manage to extinguish the sentence due to non-fulfilment of the deadlines.

Aleksandër Bala, known as Aleko or Leku, the owner of a private parking lot in Sarande, was declared wanted by the police in November 2017 after a large police operation for the execution of arrest orders for the perpetrators of the "Neck-Six Massacre".

They were accused of killing and burning police officer Gjergj Mehmeti on March 4, 1997, holding hostage and torturing officer Eduard Aliaj and attempting to kill police officers Sokol Bizhga and Myzafer Blushi.

For the event in question, Vladimir and Nestor Sinani, Alqi Paguni, Eduart Çipa and Edmond Sejko were arrested and many others were declared wanted. Of all the accused, only the Sinani brothers served their sentence and have already been released from prison, as Çipa was declared innocent by the Court of Appeal and Sejko was only convicted for carrying weapons without a permit.

Agron Qurku is among the wanted persons who have not been extradited, who, in addition to the Qafë-Gjashte massacre, has also been convicted of bank theft, wounding, kidnapping, etc.

The second one who requested "prescription of the criminal decision" is Ermal Nika, 43 years old. He has been wanted since July 16, 2006, when 648 kg of marijuana were seized in the village of Vanë in Delvina. The police officers of Saranda, Ylli Kapo and Gentian Baba, were then arrested, while Ermal Nika and Pelivan Mehmetaj were declared wanted. The latter was extradited from Italy in 2014, while Nika is still on the run. The 43-year-old from Saranda was sentenced by the Court of Appeal for Serious Crimes in 2008 to 5 years and 4 months in prison, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court in 2014 after an ordeal of processes that also involved the Constitutional Court. The case in charge of Nika will be judged on Tuesday, April 30 at 12.30 by Judge Entiljano Spahiu.
