The appeal of the GJKKO has rejected the request of the former president of Albania, Ilir Meta, who requested the termination of the security measure 'prison arrest', arguing that all pre-trial detention deadlines have been violated.
Meta's defense attorney, Kujtim Çakrani, said that the court did not justify the decision at all, adding that this creates a dangerous precedent for Meta.
"We requested the termination of the security measure because it met all the criteria based on the law. We had a well-founded request. The fact that the court does not take it into account, and in the end withdraws as if it will make some terrible decision. The court today has created the dangerous precedent of holding Meta hostage in prison.
"We know what decision the court will make, will it pass it for trial or will it return it for trial. We are in total darkness regarding Mr. Meta's case. He said I dismissed the request, we do not know the reasoned decision. He has created a dangerous precedent today with Mr. Meta. The 1-year deadline expired yesterday, and the technicalities that the court can find to justify its decision. Tomorrow the request for revocation will be reviewed. The dismissal is an important procedural moment because the detention deadlines have been met," said lawyer Kujtim Çakrani.
SPAK has charged Ilir Meta with 3 criminal offenses: "passive corruption", "money laundering" and "hiding assets". SPAK closed the investigation on July 28, while the file was sent for trial at the end of August, which included three investigations in one, the CEZ-DIA affair, the LSI lobbying in the US and the property investigation. Monika Kryemadhi also faces the same charges as her ex-husband, passive corruption, money laundering and failure to declare assets.
Pirro Xhixho is accused of passive corruption of high-ranking officials committed in collaboration, while Fatime Kryemadhi is accused of money laundering, along with Ema Çoku.
