Engineer Azmer Dulević spoke about the serious incident of the rupture of the Bunec hydroelectric dam, which caused significant material damage yesterday.
In a live broadcast for the "People" show on "Euronews Albania", Dulević emphasized that hydropower plants of this type have been built for more than 10 years and many of them do not have sufficient information regarding their current condition.
He explained that some HPPs are nearing the end of their contracts and it is not known whether sufficient maintenance, terrain studies, or concrete quality checks have been carried out.
" Some of these hydropower plants are very old and we don't know if they have been maintained in good condition. This makes us suspicious, as they can create risks. The case of the dam collapse in Bunec, where 15 thousand cubic meters of water spilled and damaged the reservoir, is an example of this ," said Dulević.
He added that such events do not happen overnight, but are a possible consequence of landslides or foundation movements, which should have been reported earlier.
The engineer requested that the responsible authorities take urgent measures to control the situation at other similar hydropower plants, taking care of their safety and the surrounding environment.
