EU Ambassador to Albania Silvio Gonzato, in a meeting with journalists, spoke about the violence against them. Taking a cue from Rama's incident with a journalist, Gonzato mocked the prime minister's action, saying that violence and intimidation have no place in a democratic state. He emphasized that countries that do not have freedom of speech have no place in the EU.
"It is a fact that in the progress of the 2023 report, we highlighted some concerns such as the intersection between the media, business and political interests, which is an unhealthy situation. We discussed media ownership, which affects the quality and independence of journalism. We also emphasized the need for strengthening the main institutions of independence, such as the media regulator and the public broadcaster. We also pointed out the cases of intimidation and violence against journalists that have no place in democracy. All these issues are the essence of negotiations with Albania for the opening of negotiations. For us, freedom of speech is a clear indicator that a country is ready for the EU", said the ambassador.
Journalists, he added, must enjoy job stability, otherwise their freedom is at risk. He called on journalists to commit to telling the truth. Among other things, Gonzato did not fail to mention the independence of the media market and the transparency of media ownership.
"To create an environment where misinformation and self-censorship do not flourish. Journalists must enjoy job stability and economic benefits, without which their freedom is at risk. It is crucial that you personally commit to telling the truth. We expect to see an independent media market, independent regulator, transparency in media ownership. There should be clear rules for media funding and public advertising. The message that the EU has given is clear. Governments and public authorities are the first to have responsibility for creating a favorable environment for the media, and this also applies to Albania," said Gonzato.
