On the International Human Rights Day, the first report of the Albanian Femicide Observatory, a body of the People's Advocate, was presented, according to which it appears that 32 women and girls have been killed in Albania in the last 3 years. According to the report, the perpetrators of these murders in 90% of cases were the intimate partner or a family member.
"Beyond this official figure, there are many untold stories of violence and discrimination. These findings require urgent measures and I hope that the parliament and the authorities will address the gaps identified in this report urgently" , says the EU ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato.
According to Gonzatos, the fact that 90% of the victims of Femicide, or the killing of women and girls because of their gender, have experienced violence before from the perpetrators, but the preventive structures have been deaf, is even more disturbing.
" Less than 20% of the victims had previously reported these incidents in the family and only two received protection. And this shows a lack of sensitivity, a lack of proactive approach to this terrible problem. The fact that Albania is actively negotiating with the EU should remind us that EU membership is not just a regulatory process, it is not just the adoption of laws, but it is about a social transformation. We must all try that in our societies Femicide and violence against women and any vulnerable group has no place ", adds Gonzato.
Furthermore, by presenting these statistics, the EU ambassador requested the Assembly to carry out all the necessary procedures for the appointment of the Ombudsman. According to Gonzatos, this situation is creating anomalies.
