The Special Prosecution Office has completed the investigations and sent the file against the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, for trial, a year after his arrest. His wife, Ajola Xoxa, and 28 other people are also defendants in the same case.
During a television debate, analyst Arion Sulo stated that the investigative process has exceeded the detention deadlines and that the prosecution has acted outside the limits of its competence. According to him, Veliaj has not yet been familiarized with the investigative file, which contains about 60 thousand pages of documentation.
Sulo stressed that the prison system does not provide the minimum means to review such voluminous material and that the mayor is without legal protection. He added that recently released audio materials have raised doubts about the way prosecutors acted during the investigation.
The analyst noted that there are defendants in this case for whom the procedural deadlines have expired, but who continue to be held due to Veliaj's position. According to him, both SPAK and the Special Court bear responsibility for the situation.
In his analysis on Top Story, Sulo also spoke about a change in the Prime Minister's public stance towards Veliaj, linking this to other political and investigative developments. He emphasized that, despite the case being referred to trial, Veliaj continues to be held in detention.
The transition of the case to the trial phase opens a new procedural stage, while discussions on respecting legal deadlines and defense rights remain part of the public debate.
