The number of people who smoke has decreased in the last two decades, but according to the WHO, the figures still remain at alarming levels.
Roland Shuperka, an expert on tobacco control, says that 38% of the population over the age of 15 in our country are tobacco consumers, making this a serious concern for public health.
"38% of the population over the age of 15 smoke, so in Albania smoking is at a high level and is a very big problem for public health. In 10 lung cancer patients, 9 are tobacco users," said Shuperka.
Shuperka also addresses the consumption of electronic cigarettes, which he says are creating addiction among young age groups.
"It is unacceptable for young age groups to use even these new tobacco products. These products are not allowed to be used by ordinary citizens who are not consumers. These give the opportunity for these young people to become smokers tomorrow because they are addictive. But these products are not designed for this age group, but for the category of smokers who cannot quit smoking," adds Shuperka for "Vizion Plus".
The law banning smoking indoors is another issue that, according to expert Shuperka, is often forgotten by institutions.
"The law has been and is, but it is not respected. This law cannot be implemented if the inspection bodies are not honest enough to put everyone in a row, otherwise this law cannot be implemented ," he said.
The smoking situation remains worrying, being one of the leading causes of death in the world. Given this, the WHO calls for strengthening measures by governments by increasing taxes on tobacco products, banning advertising, and controlling and regulating new nicotine products.
