Lawyer Kreshnik Spahiu has harshly commented on the positions of the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, towards the European Union and the EU ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato.
Spahiu said that Berisha is damaging Albania's image in the international arena, by presenting the country in a negative light whenever he has the opportunity to speak in European forums.
According to him, the Albanian opposition is among the few in Europe that, due to internal political battles, goes to the point of obstructing the country's integration processes. Spahiu said that the debate on European integration is being seen through party interests and not as a national objective.
He stressed that Albania still has problems and standards that need to be met, but this does not mean that Albanian politics should lobby against the country in Brussels.
"We have an Albania without standards, do we want it in the EU or outside the EU? Should we all go and complain to the EU, don't let us in because we don't meet the standards? This requires an answer," Spahiu declared for "Report TV".
The lawyer also focused on the political perception of European integration, saying that Albanians are divided according to party beliefs.
According to him, the socialists see integration as a success for Albania, while some of the democrats perceive it as a personal victory for Edi Rama, which according to Spahiu has brought tension and rhetoric against the integration process.
He added that the responsibility for the success or failure of negotiations with the European Union falls on the government, but this does not justify attacks on Albania or international partners.
In his statement, Spahiu also criticized Berisha's constant attacks on foreign ambassadors, especially the European Union ambassador, Silvio Gonzato. He considered it paradoxical that Berisha chooses to attack the very institution where he seeks support and constantly complains: "Is Berisha right in what he says, to go to the EU and insult his own homeland?"
Spahiu also commented on the recent political clashes regarding European integration and Berisha's statements to EU representatives, describing them as harmful to the opposition and to Albania's image.
He said that even if Albania fails to become part of the European Union, this would not automatically bring about a change of power in the country.
Spahiu also reacted harshly to the inclusion of Ambassador Gonzato's personal life in the political debate, calling such an approach unacceptable: "Even going to complain to the EU and dealing with the gender and sexual orientation of the EU ambassador, this is shameful."
