Excellent people leave Albania, many young people choose to study abroad and not

Angela Riço is one of the excellent graduates in 2023 who chose to pursue higher studies outside Albania.

Out of 162 students with excellent results, 41 of them made the same decision.

"I study economic sciences at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and I intend to continue my master's degree in actuarial sciences, it is a branch that deals with the application of mathematics and statistics in risk analysis, but not only. It is mainly applied in insurance companies and banking systems. In Albania, there is not even a bachelor's or master's program, that's why I chose to go to Switzerland. I see a lot of potential in Albania because it is in its infancy and I consider being part of the development of this branch in our country. The decision to return will depend on several factors and will be left to the future, but the desire is to return and bring innovation", says the student.

The expert on education, employment and career issues, Erion Muça, notes that students who are educated in more developed countries constitute a very important contingent for our society.

"There is a very high dominance of Albanian students to continue their studies abroad, mainly in three main directions: Medical sciences, in information and communication technology and in specific branches that are mainly related to their passions. Other less well-known branches are very much related to specific requests from abroad or to announcements and academic offers made by international universities through online opportunities where they offer not only scholarships but also very low-cost accommodation and food that make it possible to attract students from different countries of the world", says Muça.

But the experience in the last decade reflects pessimism regarding the return to the Albanian labor market.

"The number of returning students in the last five years is not more than 5% of those who left. Most of those who come face a very difficult, almost frustrating terrain for them. Most of those who return aim for the public administration, while in the private sector it is almost impossible. This is due to the fact that the Albanian labor market does not have such standards and management systems to support them. There is uncertainty" , he says.

Moreover, the so-called "brain drain" phenomenon continues to have an upward trend.

"The brain drain is a very negative phenomenon, it accounts for 20-25% of those who leave the country. This will make the labor market unattractive for large international investments, there will be real difficulties for the growth and development of certain sectors, and the lack of human resources will lead to the closure of activity in many industries" , says the expert.

While the modernization and standardization of internal processes in a good part of the industries, needs to be prioritized. /V izionplus.tv
