Immigrants sheltered in Gjadër returned to Italy, BIRN: It is unclear if

12 migrants from Egypt and Bangladesh were returned to Italy by an Italian coastguard vessel after the Rome Court's decision ordered their return.

The Italian authorities moved on Saturday to implement the decision of the Immigration Court in Rome for the immigrants, who were settled on Wednesday in the Gjadri camp in Lezhë.

The Italian coast guard ship arrived around 7:30 am on Saturday at the port of Shengjin to transport immigrants to the neighboring country. Immediately after the anchoring of the boat in the port, the Italian authorities, accompanied by the Albanian police, transported the 12 immigrants from the Gjadri camp to Shengjin.

The procedures at the port lasted only a few minutes and the migrants, accompanied by Italian forces, boarded the coast guard ship, which at around 9:00 a.m. left for the Port of Bari in Italy. The 12 migrants from Bangladesh and Egypt were caught by the Guardia di Finanza and brought to the Gjadri camp by Italian navy ship on Wednesday 16 October.

But after two days, the Court of Rome ordered their return to Italy, based on a decision of the European Court of Justice on October 4 for asylum seekers from unsafe countries. Referring also to the European Court of Justice, the decision of the body of Rome judges states that Egypt and Bangladesh are considered unsafe countries and, therefore, the 12 migrants must stay in Italy and not in camps, nor can they be allowed to free in the Albanian territory.

The Albania-Italy agreement for immigrants was signed in November 2023 between the prime ministers of both countries, Rama and Meloni, but with this decision of the Court of Rome it remains unclear whether this agreement can work, although in Shengjin and Gjadër the Italian state has invested millions of euros in the establishment of two centers./BIRN
