At least 3 million energy bills were not paid on time by consumers and as a result, late payment interest was applied and paid on them.
Official data reported by public energy sector companies and published by the Energy Regulatory Authority show that the total amount of interest arrears by the end of August was 652 million lek or about 6.5 million euros.
The month with the highest level of arrears interest was August with 122 million lek or about 1.22 million euros, followed by July with 850 thousand euros and January with over 830 thousand euros.
As for the number of monthly invoices on which late interest has been paid, they fluctuate between 300 thousand, which is the month with the lowest level, which coincides with February, and over 464 thousand, which is the month of August.
Late payment interest accrues on an invoice when the monthly invoice is not paid within the 30-day period of the following month. So if the invoice was issued for September, it can be paid without interest until the end of October.
In addition, OSHEE has been collecting overdue debts from customers who have entered into agreements for debt accumulated over the years. These agreements were entered into several years ago for both family and business customers and provided for repayment in installments.
By the end of August, the total collections of the Universal Service Provider, which is part of the OSHEE Group, were 50.7 billion lek or about 507 million euros. On-time bill payments resulted in a level of 97.8 percent for the 8-month period.
The number of consumers connected to the electricity distribution network, according to periodic statistics from OSHEE, is 1.36 million, while the total bills with consumption readings in the 8 months of this year were 8.5 million./Monitor
