At around 5.30 am this Sunday, an alarm alarmed the medical staff and patients of the Emergency Department of QSUT, who realized that there had been a fire in this building.

In these conditions they were evacuated and the patients were sent to other wards.

Albana Fico, the director of QSUT said: "Immediate measures were taken to evacuate the patients upstairs and send them to the wards."

For the evacuation of patients whose condition was not good, not only doctors and family members helped, but also the police of Tirana, which helped to bring the patients down the stairs with stretchers.

The situation was traumatic even for the family members of the patients who were woken up in the morning by the call asking for help.

"My mother called me at 5 in the morning and said 'there was a fire', I took her with my sister and went down the stairs, there was neither a wheelchair nor a stretcher and the elevators were not working", says a citizen.

"I have a relative here, he is not answering my phone," said another.

"I heard sirens in the morning and I was worried. At six o'clock I saw the patients who went outside, now I'm going to visit my relative", says the citizen.

"It's a scandal to have a fire in the hospital," says one of them.

But not all citizens were informed that the QSUT emergency was out of order due to the incident this Sunday. Cars with emergency patients kept arriving at the doors of the hospital, after which the staff directed them to go to the trauma hospital or the Shefqet Ndroqi Hospital.

From field observations by a group of experts and the fire service, they suspect that the fire came from an electric spark from a battery in one of the technical rooms of the minus 1 floor of this emergency.

The burning of these batteries produced a toxic fume that forced the evacuation of the entire emergency. When the alarm went off, the hearth was immediately isolated and the damage was minor only in one of the technical rooms, but initially the risk was quite high since the underground floors also contain nuclear materials which are used for imaging equipment.
