Albania ranks among the countries with the highest percentage of smoking population in the region. Invited to the 'Health o'clock' show, expert on tobacco and alcohol issues, Roland Shuperka, stated that 38.8% of Albanians smoke.
Broken down by gender, 56% of men and 18% of women in our country are smokers. Even more alarming is the fact that the expert states that experimentation with cigarettes begins at the age of 7, as a result of peer pressure.
"Even 7-year-old children have tried it, but now it is happening that students who are in 9-year-old school are also drinking from the new products. On the other hand, there are also children in the neighborhood who encourage children, so the pressure of the social group makes them try it. Seeing that your parent smokes, then the child will try it too ," said Shuperka.
The expert also answered questions from citizens interested in quitting smoking and breaking free from addiction. In this case, he suggests new nicotine products and smokeless tobacco as a less harmful alternative.
"For the age group around 30, I would recommend switching to other alternatives such as nicotine products that do not burn smoke. Burning smoke with carbon monoxide causes what 85% of lung cancer patients are smokers ," the expert emphasized.
These products, Shuperka emphasizes, are designed only for smokers, and should not be used by persons under 18 years of age.
