Pollution map in Tirana, here are the three most problematic areas

A recent study on air pollution in three municipalities in the country has identified Tirana as the most problematic. "Student City", Dibra Street and the Medrese area are the most sensitive areas for air quality in the capital, where dust particles and carbon dioxide exceed European Union norms.

Air quality continues to remain one of the main environmental problems in the country. According to a monitoring conducted by Co-Plan for 2025 in 6 municipalities: Tirana, Durrës, Elbasan, Korçë, Fier and Shkodër, the capital has the most worrying reality.

"Measurement results in Tirana show that the values of fine dust particles are within the permitted EU norms. However, in some areas of the capital the pollution level is higher ," reports journalist Gerta Vasku.

Heavy traffic at all hours of the day affects the air quality on Dibra Street, Student City and the Madrasa area. The level of dust particles within the permitted limits results only during the summer months, while in other periods of the year their values tend to increase significantly.

The report highlights that the most problematic parameter during monitoring is nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), which in some areas of the city results in up to 3 times the norms set by the European Union. The highest levels of this pollutant were recorded in areas such as the intersection of the Boulevard with the Ring Road, the area near the New Maternity Hospital, Ali Demi and Elbasani Street. Likewise, the level of carbon dioxide results in problems in some specific areas, reaching up to over 4 times the recommended norms.

Even in Durrës, measurements for dust particles showed values above the norms near the main axes and the port. In the other cities, Fier, Korçë, Shkodër and Elbasan, the highest pollution occurs near industrial areas and axes with the highest vehicle flow.

Measurement data show that the main sources of pollution are heavy road traffic, construction sites, the burning of fossil fuels and the lack of green spaces./ TvKlan
