According to data published in the media, Prosecutor Basho has found significant discrepancies between declared income and owned assets, including an apartment for which she has not explained the financial source.
The High Inspectorate for Declaration and Control of Assets and Conflict of Interest (HIDCPI) has launched an in-depth investigation against Saranda prosecutor Esmeranda Basho, following serious suspicions of concealment of assets, false declaration and failure to accurately declare financial resources.
According to data published in the media, Prosecutor Basho has found significant discrepancies between declared income and owned assets, including an apartment for which she has not explained the financial source.
One of the elements that has raised suspicions is the declaration of a rented apartment at the absurd value of only 5 thousand lek per month, a figure that contradicts the reality of the rental market in Saranda, especially for an official of this level. This detail has been considered by sources close to the ILDKPI as a "strong indicator of real concealment of wealth."
The investigation has also revealed that Basho owns other assets, including property and movable assets, for which there is no legal justification for the source of income. ILDKPI is also expected to request an in-depth banking verification to identify any undeclared income.
If the suspicions confirmed by the asset control prove true, the case of prosecutor Esmeranda Basho may be subject to criminal prosecution, under Article 257/a of the Criminal Code, which provides for penalties for false declaration or concealment of assets by public officials.
This development comes at a time when public trust in the judiciary is at an all-time low, and every case that casts doubt on the integrity of a prosecutor adds to the crisis of credibility in the justice system.
Pending the completion of the investigations, the ILDKPI is expected to publish a final report, which may lead to disciplinary and criminal measures against Prosecutor Basho, based on the evidence that will result during the verification process.
This scandal is not new to the public, as it has been repeatedly denounced by the investigative show "Stop" on TV Klan , which has brought to attention the suspicious cases of prosecutor Esmeranda Basho's assets and her manner of declaring them to the ILDKPI.
The show has published documents, evidence, and lease contracts that show blatant discrepancies between official statements and economic reality, long raising the alarm about the lack of transparency and ethical standards in the ranks of the Albanian judiciary.
