Hands off the judges immediately!

When politics anathematizes judges, crime feels free to strike. The government that attacks the courts is paving the way for anarchy...

The murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja in the courtroom of the Court of Appeal in Tirana on October 6, 2025 is the final frontier that Albania should never have crossed. A man entered a courtroom with a gun, shot a state representative, and killed a symbol of the law. This is not just a criminal act. It is an attack on the state and on the belief that justice can still exist in this country.

Astrit Kalaja was not only killed by the bullets of an angry criminal over a property issue. He was also killed by the climate of political and verbal violence that has been fueled every day for two years against judges and prosecutors. Every public statement that labels them as “enemies,” “corrupt,” or “political tools” has stripped the justice system of the dignity and security it deserves.

In March 2024, former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his lawyers publicly attacked Judge Irena Gjoka, distributing personal accusations and fabricated documents. In August and September 2025, Prime Minister Edi Rama himself published names and photos of judges, labeled them with derogatory language and accused them of “making fun of the law”, while the Union of Judges warned that these actions are political blackmail against the judiciary. The High Judicial Council reacted by saying that judges cannot be the object of insults from anyone, much less from the executive branch.

In this poisoned terrain, a gun entered the courtroom and was fired at a judge. This is a direct consequence of a culture that has made the judge guilty before he judges. Politicians have sown distrust, insults and contempt for the institutions they are supposed to protect, and today they are reaping the results: a fearful system, a divided public opinion and one less hope for the rule of law.

The courts are the only institution that can maintain legal order in a country gripped by corruption and propaganda. They are the only mechanism that can keep this country afloat.

Anyone who uses justice for political revenge is harming the security of citizens.

Take your hands off the judges. Don't use them for propaganda. Don't humiliate them in public. Don't turn them into objects of hatred, and most importantly: Don't kill our hope!  /Pamphlet
