Geraldo Durda, who lost his brother in the Gërdec massacre on March 15, 2008, says that the explosion that occurred at the weapons dismantling factory is a state crime.
In an interview for "Ora e Fundit" on ABC News, Durda stated that Shkëlzen Berisha, the son of Sali Berisha, who was prime minister at the time, communicated with Fatmir Mediu, the Minister of Defense, 5 minutes after the explosion in Gërdec.
Durda stated that there is evidence for this in the Special Court, where the telephone records are. According to Durda, there is testimony from workers in Gërdec, who say that Shkëlzen Berisha was seen at the dismantling factory.
"The tragedy of Gërdec is one of the unsolved events by the Albanian justice system. For years, the Durda family has requested that this case be reopened. It took the decision of the Court in Strasbourg to reopen this case. What we are waiting for is justice for Gërdec. 26 people died there, a village was blown up. This is an issue for the entire Albanian society. It is the duty of state institutions to clarify this issue. The trial and full investigation of the Gërdec tragedy. If I were a prosecutor, I would bring out the guilty party. For me as a family member, it is important that Gërdec is clarified. As for who the author is, in 2009 I would say the state. Today, the GJKKO has evidence, the tablets with the son of former Prime Minister Berisha have been released.
There are communications with Fatmir Mediu, 5 minutes after the explosion of Gërdec. They are telephone records. Gërdec was not a technological accident, it was a state crime, organized and beyond the people who ran the institutions. There are individuals who have exerted pressure, where the dismantling site would be determined. There were also interests of personal gain. Mr. Berisha should not be afraid if he is innocent. There is testimony from workers who saw Shkëlzen Berisha there, but I do not know what to say. My family has shown that it has not withdrawn from this issue and we will not withdraw. In the courtroom, we were told to rest, we have been listening to them for 15 years, by the former Minister of Defense. We are no longer impressed. We expect an investigation and trial for Gërdec. It is enough for the guilty to come forward and be punished", he stressed.
