Strong tensions were recorded during the opposition protest near the villa of former dictator Enver Hoxha, where Democratic Party protesters threw Molotov cocktails towards the building.
As a result of the incendiary attack, the facility was engulfed in flames, while thick clouds of black smoke were seen throughout the surrounding area, causing panic among citizens and passersby.
According to preliminary information, there were 25 foreign nationals inside the villa, most of them Americans. They were evacuated from the building on the other side of the building thanks to the rapid intervention of the fire brigade, who managed to bring the flames under control.
There is no official report of any injuries yet, while police have increased security measures in the area and are working to identify the perpetrators of the incendiary devices.
A year ago, Villa 31 was turned into 'Art Explora'. For some time, the French foundation Art Explora has been working to rehabilitate and take over the management of the famous villa and turn it into a visitor center.
