The former foreign minister, Ditmir Bushati, says that Germany and France are in agreement regarding the reformation of how the countries of the Western Balkans and the countries in the east of Europe join the European Union.
In an interview for ABC News, Bushati said that the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has spoken about speeding up the process, while the French one, Emmanuel Macron, is more skeptical about EU expansion.
" This is a debate that is taking place now in the EU. Germany and France are in agreement and that is a good thing. That a reform of the way of voting is needed, on some issues, so as not to block the EU's ability to act. Second, a better division of positions in the Commission and the European Parliament. Third, for some policies that may not affect us, but very well affect the countries of origin. A membership of Ukraine in the EU would automatically take all the countries of the East, from Poland to Croatia, from beneficiaries to contributors. It is a country several times larger than all the countries of the Western Balkans together. This is a debate that requires an exhaustive discussion within the EU. Where Germany and France divide, it is on the road how to go.
The German chancellor talks about speeding up the process, while the French president is more skeptical. France has never looked favorably on the membership of countries from the East. In Macron I see a positive opening that we should take advantage of. It is Macron who stopped the integration process in 2018, now Macron, proposing the idea of the European political community, talks about a Europe with several speeds", stressed Bushati.
