Matteo Salvini has reacted to the statements of singer Ermal Meta, made the day before during a press conference.

The artist of Albanian origin, speaking about the lyrics of the songs, stated: "If the Crusca Academy chooses among the best a text written by an immigrant, ask some questions." He added ironically: "I'm a foreigner, don't tell Salvini, lest he feel bad."

Following these comments, Deputy Prime Minister Salvini published an official statement congratulating Ermal Meta for his "perfect use of the Italian language", calling him "an example of integration in our country".

Ermal Meta, 44, left Albania at the age of 13 and settled with his family in Bari, where he grew up and studied music at an Italian school. He has completed the procedures for obtaining Italian citizenship and enjoys the status of an Italian citizen.

In his reaction, Salvini emphasized: "I have long opposed illegal immigrants and people who break the law, and I am sure that Ermal Meta also shares the same position. A hug for the proud Albanian people, long live Sanremo, the Italian language and music."

The statements from both sides were made in the context of public discussions about language, integration and the Sanremo Festival.
